As we try to approach the end of 2020, we look forward to the hottest color trends of 2021. Sherwin Williams released their top paint color trends for the upcoming year, a collection I look forward to all year long.
“We started telling a story last year about using color to help us feel grounded as we were headed into a new decade. Now we are continuing that inward journey by exploring the past, examining the present and looking at what this all means for our future,” said Sue Wadden, Director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. “The rhythm of color is examining where we’ve been to help inform where we’re going and to help us create that central hub that is so vital to our everyday living and working now.”
This colormix forecast are made up of forty hues that are split amongst four palettes categorized as Sanctuary, Encounter, Continuum and Tapestry, which can be found at Sherwin Williams Color Mix Forecast 2021.
Sanctuary
Sanctuary is made up of warm neutrals and natural tones. According to Sherwin Williams, this palette focuses on the connection that the natural world has to nurturing wellness and calm. My favorite paint color from the Sanctuary Palette is Modern Gray, it is a base color that brings comfort to any space.

Encounter
The Encounter Palette features colors that take visual cues from the past’s humble beginnings, speak to the present and guide the path forward. The collection features a modern bohemian aesthetic and natural materials complement the earthy tones. Reddened Earth and Rosemary are my top picks from this palette. These complimentary hues are the perfect subtle accent to any surface.
Continuum
Sherwin Williams created the Continuum Palette to tell the story of smart living and how technology ties into everyday living and the desire for it to blend seamlessly into the whites, charcoals and pops of color in everyday environments. This color collection is a hybrid of synthetic and natural and sculptural modernism and minimalism. My top three from this palette are Great Falls, Cyberspace, and Wishful Blue. These colors have a presents about them that can anchor any space and create a conversation.

Tapestry
Last but not least we have the vibrant colors and reinvented classics in the Tapestry Palette. Sherwin Williams cultivated this collection to signal joy and layer together to tell a story through texture and pattern. Cape Verde is by far my favorite in this collection, it provides a strong statement that can command any room.
Creating Balance and First Impressions
Creating balance between fast and slow, quiet and expressive, and virtual and physical. The forecast is designed to bring the pulse of color to any space. If Sherwin-Williams is right, “bold blues, muddy greens, muted reds, bright pinks, and warm whites” will soon be the new hues design studios and interior designers alike are expected to harp on next year.
First impressions are everything, and color can often make an impact that is easily unforgettable while creating a breathtaking harmony. Paint transforms a space, but it also can be the focal point of a space and its surroundings. Color trends are no different than other design trends—they are fast-paced and ever-shifting.
